COLOR

The majority of colorless lab-grown diamonds range from colorless to light yellow or light brown. They belong to the Cape series and are graded on a color scale ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or light brown). This internationally recognized grading system makes it possible to assess and compare a diamond’s color with precision.

If lab-grown diamond composed solely of carbon is colorless, it may contain atomic impurities or structural defects; these anomalies then become chromogenic centers which will color the stone. The vast majority of lab grown diamonds are type IIA, the highest distinction among colorless diamonds, meaning they contain neither nitrogen nor boron.
likely to nuance their perfectly pure “water”. Lab-grown diamonds also come in all the colors of the rainbow, yellow, pink, blue... they are called Fancy Colors in English; their shade is clear and evaluated using a different color scale.

While lab-grown diamonds are often associated with colorless stones from the Cape series, they can also display a remarkable spectrum of colors. These distinctive and captivating hues are increasingly sought after in the world of fine jewelry and are known as Fancy Colors.

Color opens up a fascinating world in which each stone can reveal different nuances depending on the lighting and the individual perception of the observer.

Atomic impurities or structural variations within the crystal lattice are responsible for these distinctive colors. In Fancy Color diamonds, shapes such as cushion, oval, pear or radiant can also be chosen to enhance the perception and intensity of the color.

The interpretation of a gemological certificate for a Fancy Color lab-grown diamond differs from that of a colorless diamond. Although the traditional 4Cs — Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut — remain important characteristics, Color takes a predominant role, while clarity and cut are considered differently in the overall assessment of the stone.

The color description is based on three key elements: the dominant color, any secondary hue, and the intensity of the color, graded according to internationally recognized terminology.

On gemological certificates, Fancy Color grades are expressed in English according to the color characteristics of the stone. For example:
